Abstract
As the obese population is increasing rapidly worldwide, studies have proven the effectiveness of the digital health programs in obesity management. The purpose of this study is to systematically review the digital health programs for obesity management in South Korea by analyzing 22 articles. For the program objectives, obesity management, weight control, weight loss, obesity treatment, and improving exercise adherence were commonly used. Many programs included nutrition education and counseling, psychological intervention, behavioral treatment, weight management, sharing information (via SNS), and individual counseling as the major components of the programs. However, more than half of the studies did not develop the programs based on the concrete theoretical background or conceptual model. Participants of the programs were mainly adults, and more specifically targeting the female population. Out of 22 studies, twelve studies reported their programs to be partially effective whereas the other ten studies reported the programs to be effective in all domains. Studies have focused primarily on the numerical changes in height, weight, BMI, waist-hip circumference, or blood composition of the participants before and after the intervention. Based on these findings, we suggest for future studies to clearly conceptualize and categorize the objectives of the programs, strengthen the theoretical background, and to use reliable and valid scales to test effectiveness of the programs.
